Pass around some rectangles (oblongs) for the children to feel. Find rectangles made from a variety of materials such as card, foam, plastic or wood. Look around the room for more rectangles.

Teacher-directed concrete activity
Use skipping ropes to make a large rectangle on the floor. Give each child a turn to walk around the rectangle with one foot on each side of the rope. Sing ‘here we go round the rectangle’ as they go along.

Give each child a turn to trace the shape of Grandpa Rectangle's face with their finger. Colour him in and add a small piece of cotton wool on each side for his hair. Give the children a rectangle cut from coloured paper for his body and the children draw in the arms and legs.
